This collector’s edition calendar is the third in a series that celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Secretariat. It is part of a research project by photojournalist Patricia McQueen on Secretariat as a sire. (Scroll down to read more about Patricia and her work.)
This calendar features beautiful photography and facts about the last known remaining sons and daughters of Secretariat, a number that is down to just four: Ball Chairman, Border Run, Secret of the Sea and Trusted Company (making her first appearance in the calendar series). In addition, several grandsons of Secretariat are included, each notable for different reasons: the senior legends A.P. Indy and Istabraq, plus Holy Roman Emperor, Tobias, Brigantes and High Action. Also honored are previous members of the Living Legends class who are no longer with us. Finally, there is also a photo of the great Secretariat himself, courtesy of The Tony Leonard Collection.
This 12-month calendar runs from January 2020 through December 2020, and measures 12" wide and 18" tall when opened. The price is $25, and free shipping within the USA is included.
All profits from the sale of the calendar are allocated to two worthy organizations, each of which has been a caretaker of at least one of the last known Secretariats. They are Bright Futures Farm, an equine rescue and sanctuary accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, and Victory Alliance Ranch, an equine rescue and sanctuary supporting veterans and special needs children.

Patricia McQueen has been photographing fine Thoroughbreds since 1983, and her work has been featured in publications around the world. She has always had a special interest in descendants of Secretariat, and her fascination with the Triple Crown winner has never waned.
Also a journalist, several years ago Patricia began a research project for a book on Secretariat as a sire. Everyone knows this great racehorse made his mark as a broodmare sire, and through his mares he is responsible for such sires as Storm Cat, A.P. Indy, Summer Squall, Gone West, Chief’s Crown and Volksraad (in New Zealand), among many others further down the generations, including Tapit. Can you imagine Thoroughbred racing today without those sires?
Even though Secretariat made his mark as a broodmare sire, his general sire record is often unjustly criticized. To set the record straight, Patricia has been researching Secretariat's sons and daughters in order to tell their stories – not just the sons and daughters that are champions, like Lady’s Secret and Risen Star, but also others that, but for a little luck, could have had a much bigger impact on Secretariat's overall record as a sire.
In 2016, she met Innkeeper, a then 28-year-old son of Secretariat. He triggered a search for more living sons and daughters of Secretariat, and this took her on a journey around North America, and even to Ireland, photographing the horses in this calendar. These stories, and stories of earlier sons and daughters, are being told on Thoroughbred Racing Commentary.
"The first time I ever used a real camera was during a pilgrimage to see my hero Secretariat while I was in college. I made a lot of mistakes using the camera, but the memories are priceless. That trip launched my photography career, which now spans 35 years."
